We are Tommy & Geannie Gray. We live in a town in Southeastern Kentucky with our Shihpoo, Silvey and our Chocolate Lab, Samson and some random chickens. And our Jeep.
Our awesome sons are grown and married now, so we're itching for a bit of adventure. We always camped and did outdoors things with them as we home schooled them growing up, but life got a little busy as they got older and those things have sort of fallen to the side.
Now that it's getting close to Tommy's retirement, we decided we'd like to travel and go places we've only dreamed of going before. We never had a lot of extra money for exploration type vacations or anything and usually had more like "staycations" but as this new phase of life draws near, we're making plans to hit the road!
We just got our Jeep (who really needs a good name! please drop your suggestions in the comments!) in February after burning up the roads in our also-awesome Dodge Challenger. We loved Ruby (she sorta picked that name for herself) since she was a real dream ride but her value was at its peak and we were really looking for something we could drive in rougher places without worry of getting stuck (or dirtying Ruby too much) so we scoured the internet looking for a Jeep Rubicon and found this one. Whitey? Nah. Jimmy? Tommy says no to that one. So our Jeep remains nameless for now.
We want to do some real road tripping and do it as cheaply as possible, which means avoiding motels and even campgrounds (some of those things have gotten so expensive!) and that's when we discovered this thing called "overlanding".
We are making plans and saving pennies to outfit our Jeep with all the things we'll need to spend a lot of time on the road... roof rack, rooftop tent, an awning and annex for said tent, all manner of brackets and such for hauling extra gasoline, water and food. We realized this was going to be a rather long time happening, so we thought we'd chronicle our adventure for our own satisfaction and share it for anyone else out there who's already livin' the dream or thinking about it.
And so, Amazing Grays was born.
